Rocketman Has Screened, See What People Are Saying

On the heels of the worldwide box office phenomenon known as Bohemian Rhapsody comes another tribute to a popular music icon who rose to fame in the ‘70s and loved to don a glittery get-up: Rocketman. Taron Egerton stars as Elton John in a biopic/musical framed around his breakthrough years.

Ahead of its theatrical release in a couple weeks, Rocketman has now premiered at Cannes Film Festival in France to a standing ovation from the crowd. That’s certainly a good sign! But did it lift off and soar in critics' eyes? Let’s take a look at some of the first reactions about the fantasy musical.

CinemaBlend's own Sean O'Connell is now in London doing interviews for Rocketman. Before that, he had a chance to see the movie and shared his rave review:

We can talk about Rocketman? It’s FANTASTIC. A wonderful, emotional and uplifting musical that weaves Elton John’s classics into a heartbreaking ode to fame. Taron Egerton is BRILLIANT and Dexter Fletcher stages jaw-dropping musical interludes. A home run!

That's a great start! Rebecca Keegan of The Hollywood Reporter sounds like she was absolutely floored by the film. Take a look:

Hot damn, Taron Egerton is the real deal. Rocketman is a musical about picking yourself up off your ass and Taron delivers the sweat, grit and vulnerability it needs.

Along with loving Taron Egerton’s iteration of the music sensation, she praised it for the “I’m Still Standing” message. The actor worked closely with the Elton John himself, even having to sing and act with John in front of him, which he understandably found to be extremely intimidating. The iconic musician has been quite supportive of Egerton though.

Not everyone was completely convinced by Egerton’s performance though. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw felt he didn’t quite hit every note with these words:

Dexter Fletcher’s Rocketman is a good-natured biopic-slash-jukebox-musical with Taron Egerton gamely doing a middleweight impersonation, more comfortable with the lighter side, better at the tiaras than the tantrums.

When it comes to the dramatic aspects of Rocketman, Bradshaw didn’t feel like he sold it. Conversely, Stuart Oldham of Variety specifically pointed out the more somber moments of the film hitting a high for him. Here’s what he said:

Rocketman is fantastic, a musical drama that hits all the right notes, especially the sad ones.

Elton John’s husband of 26 years, John Furnish, recently watched the flick and said his personal struggles at the beginning of his career and prior to their life together made him want to give John a hug. Considering some of these reactions, as an audience we may collectively be feeling the same way as the film discusses his stint in rehab and sexual identity.

A couple months ago, there were rumors that Paramount had cut a “nude cuddle” between Taron Egerton’s Elton and Richard Madden’s John Reid due to the studio pulling back on the film’s adult content. This reaction from NY Times’ Kyle Buchanan indicates Rocketman does not steer away from portraying his sexuality. In his words:

Pleasantly surprised that Rocketman does not skimp on the gay sex, but the gayest thing about the movie is still Taron Egerton insisting he’s fat when he isn’t.

One primary criticism of last year’s Bohemian Rhapsody was the way it shied away from completely exploring Mercury’s relationships with men – Rocketman won’t be making that mistake. Richard Madden’s role is also gaining recognition as well. Here’s what Anne Thompson of IndieWire had to say:

Richard Madden is swaggeringly hot as Elton John’s manager John Reid who was also the villain in Bohemian Rhapsody. He really would make a great James Bond.

Comparisons to the Queen biopic just keep coming up! In addition to the film sharing a bit of the same subject matter and Dexter Fletcher being involved as director in both, it also includes one of the same villains. To round out the reactions, check out Ramin Setoodeh’s thoughts:

Rocketman is thankfully better than Bohemian Rhapsody. But it also feels like a Broadway musical that was forced into a movie. Or, The Greatest Showman set at the Abbey.

It looks like the movie is a lot more musical than biopic, but it still works better than the Queen film in his opinion. The Variety bureau chief also caught a sweet video of Taron Egerton’s own reaction upon seeing the film and watching the audience’s reaction at Cannes. Take a look:

The actor looks both happy and overwhelmed at his Rocketman debut! The 29-year-old actor is still fairly new to the industry and still best known for his Kingsman role. After the premiere, he and Elton John took to the stage to perform the song “Rocketman” together, captured by The Hollywood Reporter:

Wow! The actor has found a duet partner in Elton John before when they sang “Tiny Dancer” at an Oscars party in February. The pair look energized by the film’s screening in this performance. It was no doubt an emotional day for the both of them seeing their work on the film (and for John, quite literally his life’s work) finally premiere.

Rocketman hits theaters on May 31 and is expected to open at around $20 million during its first weekend as Godzilla: King of the Monsters presumably tops the musical.

One Marvel Hero Had To Be Added To Endgame's Women-Of-Marvel Sequence Via Digital Effects

Warning: SPOILERS for Avengers: Endgame are ahead!

It’s safe to say that the final battle in Avengers: Endgame, where 2014 Thanos and his forces clashed with all the MCU heroes and their accompanying allies, is the biggest action packed sequence of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far. Among the notable moments was when all the Marvel heroines (except for Black Widow, who died earlier) came together to ensure that the Infinity Gauntlet reached the quantum tunnel inside Scott Lang’s van.

Ironically, it turns out that the one male hero who was around for this sequence, Spider-Man, was digitally inserted into this Women-Of-Marvel sequence after the main shoot. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Weta Digital visual effects supervisor Matt Aiken, and here’s what he had to say about Tom Holland’s absence:

The only person who wasn’t able to be there on that day was Tom Holland, and Spidey has to hand the Gauntlet off to Captain Marvel at the start of that shot, so we had a stand-in for Spidey and we ended up filming him with a kind of faux-motion control rig a couple of weeks later when Tom Holland became available, and we tracked him into that shot and popped him in.

It’s a wonder that so much of Avengers: Endgame’s climactic conflict managed to have all the actors together on stage, but this is one instance where schedules weren’t 100% able to mesh together. Peter Parker was shown interacting with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and watching as all these heroines teamed up on the battlefield, but in reality, Tom Holland had to participate in this sequence on his own. At least Matt Aiken and his VFX team at WETA made Holland inclusion as seamless as possible.

Like everyone else who was dusted at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man didn’t show up until after the battle over the destroyed Avengers base had already unfolded. Despite his limited screen time, he managed to stand out not just as the catalyst for the Women-Of-Marvel sequence, but also through the touching reunion with his mentor and father figure, Tony Stark, although their time together was tragically short as Tony would later sacrifice his life to stop Thanos’ forces.

While ultimately the Marvel heroines’ efforts in this portion of Avengers: Endgame were for naught since Thanos destroyed the van containing the Quantum Realm technology, the Women-Of-Marvel sequence as a whole was still exciting to watch. In the last couple years, various MCU actresses have talked about wanting the franchise to deliver a movie starring a female-led team, and this Endgame sequence provided a good case for such a project.

Disney Brought Avengers: Endgame To Troops In The Middle East Thanks To Viral Tweet

While Avengers: Endgame is pretty much the box office king at this current time, and it feels like a lot of people have seen it at least once, we must remember that not everyone gets to see Joe and Anthony Russo’s comic book opus at the same time. This is especially true when it comes to those men and women who are deployed overseas, in the enduring effort of protecting the world and our nation. But for those who were lucky enough to attend, there were several screenings of Avengers: Endgame brought to troops in the Middle East, as a viral tweet from a military spouse sent the right message to Disney CEO Bob Iger.

Kat Lancaster, wife to Air Force Major Joshua Lee Lancaster, was the person to spur this all on. Starting with a simple tweet, asking the Disney CEO if there was any chance of bringing Avengers: Endgame to the troops, this lead to Iger not only promising to check on the possibility of bringing the film to bases in Afghanistan and Al Udeid, but eventually delivering on said promise.

Bagram Air Base and Al Udeid Air Base were then allowed to host several showings of Avengers: Endgame for soldiers stationed in those areas. And it was all thanks to the efforts of a wife who missed her husband so much, she wanted to share a huge cultural moment with him and his colleagues.

Of course, in true Disney fashion, Stars and Stripes reported that the hard drive carrying the $1 billion+ grossing blockbuster to our men and women in the military was guarded in transit, and required an encryption key to activate. Once everything was set up though, the fun could begin, and in the case of Bagram Air Field, the film was actually shown eight times.

For those of you keeping score, that’s basically a whole entire day’s worth of Avengers: Endgame screenings, clocking in at approximately 24 hours and 16 minutes. Which is comforting to know, as if the civilian population could find themselves offered such a convenience on our home soil, it’s nice to know that for one day out of their lives, military personnel could feel like they were back home again.

Sending a theatrical experience as fantastic as Avengers: Endgame to the troops in the Middle East is a real good guy move on the part of Bob Iger and The Walt Disney Company, and it’s something that even Captain America could fully support. And while these sorts of screenings do tend to happen from time to time, it’ll be nice to see if Disney is already in talks to make sure that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker gets that same treatment come Christmas time.

Avengers: Endgame is in theaters now, and we salute Kat Lancaster in her effort to bring some normalcy and entertainment to our men and women serving abroad.

Keanu Reeves is returning for another round of chasing, shooting, knife-throwing and butt-whooping in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the much-anticipated third installment in what has become an underdog success story of sorts (no unfortunate pun intended). The 54-year-old action star is spry and still kicks ass and takes names better than most people half his age can. Keanu Reeves has proven he has chops time and time again in nearly three decades of action flicks, including (but not limited to): Speed, The Matrix movies, Point Break and more.

However, to suggest that Keanu Reeves is solely an action man would sell him short.

While the actor has been mocked heavily throughout the years for his dry delivery, Keanu Reeves has shown himself to be a resilient and ever-evolving actor; he has worked through multiple different genres throughout his career, in a wide array of films — both big and small. So, we've decided tol take a look at Keanu Reeves' other films beyond his action movies, showcasing an actor who has gone on to be one of the most dedicated and commendable performers in the film business.

Keanu Reeves In Comedies

Before he made a name for himself as an action star in the '90s and early '00s, Keanu Reeves was best known for his comedic chops. Most notably, playing the latter half of the title duo in 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and 1991's Bill & Ted's Bogus Adventure, respectively. As Ted, working alongside Alex Winter's Bill, Keanu Reeves played up his laid-back vibes to perfectly goofy effect. He had easy and winning chemistry with his on-screen friend, providing audiences everywhere with an endearing daffy slacker persona with loads of charm and heart to boot.

Surprisingly, Keanu Reeves' comedies have been few-and-far between since then. But he didn't leave the genre behind entirely. Keanu Reeves would still make appearances in the occasional comedy. Some examples include, but aren't limited to, his work in 1993's Even Cowgirls Get The Blues, 2001's The Replacements and a nice supporting turn in 2003's Something's Gotta Give. For the most part, Reeves left comedy on the back-burner to continue his action career. The actor would only dip his toes into funny territory (or, at least, intentionally funny territory) periodically for awhile, notably with his turn in 2005's little-seen indie Thumbsucker and 2015's divisive dark comedy, Knock Knock.

For my money, Keanue Reeves provided one of his best and most underrated turns in recent years in last year's winningly mean-spirited romantic comedy Destination Wedding, where he worked wonders with his sharp chemistry with Winona Ryder. Thankfully, Keanu Reeves has a new comedy lined up in the future, and it's one that has long been promised. Specifically, Reeves is set to reprise his role as Ted Logan in 2020's sequel, Bill & Ted Face the Music. Excellent!

Keanu Reeves In Suspenseful Thrillers

While the actor has often channeled his cool energy into playing the good guys, the actor has showcased a great talent for playing an opposing bad guy as well. As anyone who faced against John Wick would know, you don't want to get on the guy's bad side. Particularly when he's playing the villain, that adds a whole new layer to his capabilities as an actor. In fact, I'd argue that some of his best roles in recent years have been on the antagonist side.

More specifically, Keanu Reeves gave some of his best performances to date in a pair of controversial 2016 titles: The Neon Demon and The Bad Batch, respectively. While he doesn't have a ton of screen time in either movie, Reeves provides a menacing presence in both performances, allowing audiences to see a new side to the actor's capabilities. He can be calm and collected in an unsettling measure, and when you don't exactly know what his character is up to, it adds to the stakes enormously. Sure enough, when plays a mean, shadowy guy, you get to see more of the actor's potential.

Keanu Reeves In Dramas

While Keanu Reeves is primarily known for his genre films, the actor has found himself in a few dramas throughout the years. Notably, Reeves has found himself working with esteemed directors like Gus Van Sant, Francis Ford Coppola, Kenneth Branagh and Sam Raimi, to name a few, and his work in the dramatic arts has always been a bit wavering. Some of his best performances have been his dramatic ones. Some of his worst have been dramatic roles too, however.

His work in 1991's My Own Private Idaho was a respected departure from his established comedic work at the time. His performance in 1992's Bram Stoker's Dracula is often considered a low-point for the actor. Though the movie itself has its fans, Keanu Reeves was considered miscast in the prominent part. Luckily, it didn't deter the actor, and he continued to appear in drama films, including 1993's Shakespeare adaptation, Much Ado About Nothing, 1995's A Walk in the Clouds, 2000's The Gift and 2001's Sweet November.

Furthermore, Keanu Reeves received good notices in 2001's Hardball. While the film itself received tepid notices, his performance was praised, and it showcased a new emotional range for the actor. His last drama was 2017's Netflix film, To the Bone, which also starred Lily Collins.

Keanu Reeves in Romances

Like many of us, Keanu Reeves appears to be a romantic at heart. The actor can be the opposite of passionate in a few of his calmer or hard-edged performances. Yet, when you see the actor as the romantic love interest, you begin to see the softer, sweeter side of his persona. Some examples include 2006's The Lake House, which reunited Keanu Reeves with his Speed co-star Sandra Bullock. Prior to that, Keanu Reeves showcased his love for Cameron Diaz in 1996's Feeling Minnesota. He also showed his romantic side in 1997's drama The Last Time I Committed Suicide.

Furthermore, as mentioned earlier, Keanu Reeves appeared in Destination Wedding, though the film tends to pride itself on being a bit of an anti-romantic comedy until it's, you know, a traditional romantic comedy. But in both the romantic and unromantic sides of things, Keanu Reeves excels. When it comes time to stop making as many action flicks, it might be wise for the actor to consider more fluttering romances. Just a thought.

Keanu Reeves in Animation

Keanu Reeves has a very defined, distinctive voice. It's surprising to me that he hasn't done a lot of voiceover work, honestly. The actor's cool, commanding vocal chords can carry a lot of gravitas in the right role. That makes his rather limited voice-only appearances kinda confounding. Seems like untapped potential, if you ask me. Nevertheless, the actor has lent his pipes to a few animated projects throughout his varied career. Though notably, most of these VO parts are comedic in nature.

For instance, Keanu Reeves reprised his role as Ted Logan in 1990's short-lived animated series, Bill & Ted Excellent Adventures. The series, which only lasted 13 episodes, came out between the original film and its sequel, and it didn't make a big splash. Nevertheless, it was the first time Keanu Reeves dove into animation. It wasn't until Richard Linklater's underrated 2006 drama A Scanner Darkly that he worked in the medium again. Though the rotoscoped film is a bit of an exception, since the animation style was created by actors filming their parts on set and then being animated over in post-production through an elaborate roundabout process.

Since then, Keanu Reeves has remained in live-action, though that will change this summer. He will be playing the role of Duke Caboom in Pixar's upcoming Toy Story 4, which will be the actor's next high-profile sequel following John Wick: Chapter 3. Details about the part have been slowly creeping out before the film's release, but we should expect the part to be at least a little bit different than what we're used to getting from the actor. That's a pretty fitting way to finish up this particular piece.

In addition to the films listed above, Keanu Reeves has also proven himself in several other respects beyond his acting. He directed his first movie, the decent martial arts movie Man of Tai Chi, back in 2013. Additionally, Reeves has served as a producer on a number of films — many of which are upcoming — since 2010. He is also a musician. There's no doubt that his action career is only a small portion of his capabilities, even if it might be what he's known for best these days. Though it sounds like Keanu Reeves is willing to push himself into other projects outside of the action genre, particularly as he gets older. No matter what's next, we'll continue to keep an eye out for what's in store for Keanu Reeves.

The Russo Brothers Suggest How Long Avengers: Endgame Spoilers Should Be Protected

Avengers: Endgame has officially been out for a week now, and is making a ton of money at the box office. Plenty of moviegoers have been running to theaters to check out the 22nd installment in the MCU, hoping to get the full theatrical experience before any of the myriad twists were spoiled for them. Clearly, the stakes were sky high.

Ahead of Endgame's release, the Russo Brothers encouraged moviegoers to try and see a screening on opening weekend, to help ensure it's a spoiler-free experience. What's more, a social media campaign with #DontSpoilTheEndgame also went viral last week. But now that the movie is out, how long do we have to keep its secrets for? The co-directors recently appeared on CinemaBlend's ReelBlend podcast, where Joe Russo revealed how long he thinks the statute of limitations is. He said:

You have to be fair about it because we are, as you know, exceedingly anti-spoiler and I feel it, for the same reason, it's bullying. It could even be sociopathic to go online or, or walk out of a theater like some guy did and shout out the end of a movie while a bunch of people are standing in line waiting to go see it. And they've got 10 years of their life and their time and their emotions invested in it. It's a despicable thing to do. But I think you have to be fair. Two weekends feels like enough time for everyone to get to see it and then people should be… because you also want people to be able to talk about it. And so at a certain point, I think after the second weekend, it's okay to share spoilers.

There you have it. There's no one more anti-spoiler than Joe and Anthony Russo, who have spent the past three years guarding the secrets of the secrets of their record-breaking pair of Avengers movies. And with Endgame marking the end of the Infinity Saga and containing a ton of crazy plot twists, they've had to keep especially tight lipped. Until now.

Joe Russo's comments on ReelBleend may surprise the fandom, as the directors don't expect the public to stay mum for much longer. Spoiler alerts might be in order, but Joe believes that those moviegoers truly invested and worried about spoilers will make their way to theaters within the first two weeks of Endgame's release.

The time for spoiler-filled conversation will come up after this coming weekend, with Monday being the official day the directors suggest breaking the fan imposed gag order. Aside from the Thursday opening night and various weekday screenings that have happened over the past few days, this date will also give moviegoers two weekends to make seeing Avengers: Endgame a priority.

While these comments might jive well with the hardcore fandom who broke the internet by getting pre-sale tickets, it might not sit well with casual moviegoers. Not everyone is quite as into the MCU, and folks may be trying to catch up on the previous 21 movies ahead of seeing Endgame. But considering what a massive event Avengers: Endgame is, places like the water cooler and social media have become landmines for spoilers.

Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame are unique because there are simply so many surprising moments and plot twists. The Russo Brothers crafted an absolutely massive narrative, with deep cuts and connections to multiple movies in the MCU's history. Because there are so many mind-blowing moments throughout the movie's runtime, one spoiler can't really ruin Endgame's contents. So even if a few plot points end up revealed, there are still a plethora of big moments that should follow.

Since The Russo Brothers have such a specific date picked out to lift the ban on Avengers: Endgame spoilers, I have to wonder if the movie's marketing campaign will take a shift. Ahead of its release, the trailers revealed a small amount of footage, mostly coming from the first 30 mins of the Endgame. But after the two weekend mark, should we expect some of the movie's biggest moments appearing in TV spots and commercials?

This shift has already begun ahead of Monday, as a recent TV spot revealed some new footage of Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts. While the character was hidden from the first trailer, she was shown in her Rescue armor in the newest Avengers: Endgame commercials. This was a long awaited moment that happens super late into the film's runtime, so it's surprising that Marvel Studios loosened the reigns for Tony Stark's true love. But considering Paltrow essentially spoiled this while filming, perhaps Pepper's superhero debut wasn't the biggest plot point that had to be kept under wraps.

Since so little is known about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, opening up the conversation regarding Avengers: Endgame is a way to satisfy the rabid fandom, and their endless questions. After Spider-Man: Far From Home, the public has no semblance of when the next Marvel movies will arrive, or what their titles might be. But Endgame is finally here, and moviegoers are eager to freely discuss the record-breaking blockbuster.

The secrets of Avengers: Endgame are finally out, but Marvel Studios is still keeping its cards close to the chest. Spider-Man: Far From Home will the final installment in Phase Three, and the first movie post Infinity Saga. While this project is arriving in a few months and will help to bring the MCU back into its regularly scheduled programming, no one is sure what comes next. What's more, there's been no clue as to when Phase Four might be reveled.

The Russo Brothers might hope that the public keeps Avengers: Endgame's secrets for a few more days, but they were happy to talk about the movie's contents with ReelBlend hosts Sean O'Connell, Kevin McCarthy, and Jake Hamilton. The pair of directors are no doubt relieved that the pressure of spoilers is gone-- a responsibility that seems to have weighed on the actors as well.

Star Trek’s Zachary Quinto Is Still Hoping To Play Spock Again

Star Trek found new life on the big screen when J.J. Abrams brought the franchise back with a new timeline in 2009. That film's success spawned a pair of sequels and we were expecting a fourth film to come along in short order. However, the most recent word is that the film is not currently an active concern for the studio. Having said that, Zachary Quinto certainly hopes that he gets a chance to play Spock again at some point.

When recently asked by Vulture about the status of Star Trek 4, not to be confused with The Voyage Home, Zachary Quinto stated that he had no idea what the plan for the franchise was at this point, though he made it clear that he certainly wants a fourth movie to happen, saying...

I don’t know what’s happening with that, and I’m trying to figure out what, if anything, will be the future for it. I feel glad that the franchise is having its own life continuing on [with Star Trek: Discovery] and my hope is that we’ll also get to go back and play those roles again. But there’s no telling right now if it’ll happen or not.

Almost as soon as Star Trek Beyond hit theaters we were expecting a fourth film to get the green light. Franchise producer J.J. Abrams was already talking about an idea that would have brought Chris Hemsworth, who had a cameo in the first film as the father of James T. Kirk, back into the series, and everybody seemed very excited. Director S.J. Clarkson was brought on to direct the film and everything appeared to be going smoothly.

However, it seems that because Star Trek Beyond had a somewhat lackluster box office, Paramount Pictures was looking to save money and wanted Chrises Pine and Hemsworth to take pay cuts for the project. Negotiations stalled out, and from there what had seemed to be a promising new movie appears to have fallen apart.

Chris Hemsworth has recently stated that, in the end, he didn't think there was enough of a reason to move forward with the film, and so he decided to walk away from it.

Star Trek as a franchise certainly isn't going anywhere. As Zachary Quinto mentions, Star Trek: Discovery, which includes his character Spock, though played by a different actor, is still keeping the popular brand going. It seems almost certain that we will get more Star Trek on the big screen at some point, but we simply have no idea what form that will take.

Quentin Tarantino has mentioned an idea for a Star Trek movie that looks like it has as good a shot as anything of getting made, though it's unclear if his idea would include the current movie cast or not.

Although the summer months are geared toward plenty of outdoor activities, kids are also home from school and have plenty of free time. New DVD Releases June 25, 2019

So far, there are fewer new releases this week than I’ve seen in some time. Of these, the highest profile release is probably The Aftermath, a period drama starring Kiera Knightley. When Knightley was doing press for the movie, she revealed why she’s not longer excited about doing nude scenes.
